Fill a planter with a high-quality compost, keeping some back to cover the seeds with. Dampen the compost down and then evenly scatter the seed mixture over the surface. Lightly cover the seeds with the remaining compost and firm down. Place a clear bag over the planter and locate to a warm sunny location, a green house or warm windowsill is ideal.

Do not place the planter outside as the cold temperatures will affect seed germination.

Once the seedlings start to appear, the plastic bag can be removed. The planter should be watered and turned daily to prevent it from drying out and the seedlings from growing towards the light. Once the risk of frost has passed the planter can be hardened off by placing it outdoors during the day and bring it back indoors at night. This should be repeated for 7 days. The planter can then be placed outdoors in a sunny location.

For beds and borders

Sow seeds direct outdoors in a sunny weed free location once the risk of frost has passed.

Clear the area of stones and weeds and rake the soil to a fine tilth. Sow the seeds evenly over the area and lightly cover with a thin layer of soil or compost. Water well and try not to disturb the area. Regularly check that the soil is damp to the touch but don't overwater.

At the end of the season, allow the foliage to go to seed and die back naturally. This will provide seeds and nesting materials for wildlife visiting your garden.
