Sow Outdoors: March – July
Harvest: June - November

Prepare beds by removing stones and weeds. Sow seeds thinly in drills 1.5cm deep and 30cm apart. Early sowings may need cloche protection from frosty conditions. Seedlings will appear within 14-21 days. Thin by harvesting young carrots evenly from the row allowing the remainder to grow on as a main crop. Water well and lift the final roots in Late autumn before the ground becomes waterlogged. Carrots can be stored in dry sand over winter. Protect from carrot flies by planting garlic or chives close by.

Harvest: July - October

Sow Indoors
Sow seeds into trays of good quality compost and lightly cover. Place the tray into a heated propagator or clear bag in a warm sunny position. Tomato seeds like to be grown in warm conditions, a greenhouse or warm conservatory is ideal. Germination should take between 7-14 days. Once seedlings have 2 true leaves they can be transplanted into individual containers and should be kept warm.
If plants are to be transferred outdoors, they should be hardened off by placing them outdoors during the day and bringing them back indoors at night. This should be repeated for 7-10 days. Plants should be spaced 60cm apart and be in a warm sheltered position. Grow bags are ideal for tomato plants, fitting 3 plants per bag. Feed regularly with a high potash tomato feed once the first flowers are showing.
Choose a position in full sun if growing outdoors. Plants may need some support when fruiting. Use garden canes and twine.
