One of the milder chillies, Jalapeno area tasty addition to the pepper family with attractive red and green fruits often used on pizzas and delicious when stuffed and baked.

Sow Indoors: March - April
Transplant: May - June
Harvest: June - September
Sow seeds into trays of good quality compost and lightly cover. Place tray into a heated propagator or clear bag in a warm sunny position. Habanero seeds need to be grown in heat, a warm greenhouse or conservatory are ideal. Germination should take between 10-21 days. Once seedlings have 3 true leaves they can be transplanted into individual containers and should be kept warm.
Chillies should be kept indoors until outdoor temperatures reach at least 18 degrees Celsius but ideally, they should be kept indoors or in a greenhouse. If plants are to be transferred outdoors, they should be hardened off by placing them outdoors during the day and bringing them back indoors at night. This should be repeated for 7-10 days. Plants should be spaced 50cm apart and be located in a warm sheltered position.
Chilli peppers can be harvested once the fruit is firm. Jalapeno plants can also be harvested and hung upside down. The fruits will stay fresh and can be harvested year-round.

Tender Perennial
The Birds Eye Chilli or Demon Chilli produces a prolific yield of small pointed bullet shaped peppers that are extremely tasty and very hot. This tender perennial will come back year after year but must be protected from cold conditions. Storing the plants in a conservatory or greenhouse over winter will ensure you have deliciously hot peppers year after year. Birds Eye peppers score 50,000 - 100,000 on the Scoville Heat Scale.
