Hardy Annual
Sunflowers are one of the most recognisable flowers in the garden and this dwarf variety produces sturdy green stems with small yellow heads. Great for children to grow, Sunflowers grow quite quickly and once the flowers start to fade the heads can be cut off and left out in the garden for the birds to feed from in the Autumn.
Sow Indoors: March - April
Sow Outdoors: April
Transplant: April - May
Flowers: July - September
Sow Indoors
Sow seeds into a tray of good quality damp compost. Lightly cover and place in a warm sunny position. Germination can take 14 - 21 days.
Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they must be hardened off by placing them outdoors during the day and bringing them back indoors at night. Repeat for 10-15 days.
Plants can be planted directly into the garden or into patio containers.
Sow Outdoors
Sow seeds outdoors once the soil has warmed. Seeds should be sown 4 cm deep and 15cm apart. Water well throughout the season, especially during hot periods.
Support growth with canes and garden twine.
